Structure and Diabatic Processes of the MJO”, a joint effort between the Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC) Program and the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Cloud System Study

چکیده
This 6.1 project is part of a long-term effort to identify and solve the major challenges of parameterizing the impacts of physical processes on atmospheric predictions extending out to seasonal time scales. Achievement of this goal will represent a significant step towards the development of an operational global earth system model targeted by the national Earth System Prediction CapabilityResearch, development, and Operations (ESPC-RDO) effort, in which the United States Navy is a participant.

Continuous Single-column Model Evaluation at a Permanent Meteorological Supersite
U ncertainties in numerical predictions of global weather and climate can often be linked to the representation of fast diabatic processes that act on such small scales that they remain unresolved by the general circulation model (GCM). Such processes include turbulence, convection, clouds, and radiative transfer (e.g., Bony and Dufresne 2005). The functional relationships included in a GCM to ...
متن کاملVertical structure and physical processes of the Madden‐Julian Oscillation: Biases and uncertainties at short range
An analysis of diabatic heating and moistening processes from 12 to 36 h lead time forecasts from 12 Global Circulation Models are presented as part of the "Vertical structure and physical processes of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO)" project. A lead time of 12-36 h is chosen to constrain the large-scale dynamics and thermodynamics to be close to observations while avoiding being too close ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Explicit versus Parameterized Convection on the MJO in a Large-Domain High-Resolution Tropical Case Study. Part I: Characterization of Large-Scale Organization and Propagation*
High-resolution simulations over a large tropical domain (;208S–208N, 428E–1808) using both explicit and parameterized convection are analyzed and compared to observations during a 10-day case study of an active Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) event. The parameterized convection model simulations at both 40and 12-km grid spacing have a very weak MJO signal and little eastward propagation. A 4-k...
متن کاملConvective Momentum Transport Associated with the Madden–Julian Oscillation Based on a Reanalysis Dataset
A better understanding of multiscale interactions within the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO), including momentum exchanges, is critical for improved MJO prediction skill. In this study, convective momentum transport (CMT) associatedwith theMJO is analyzed based on theNOAAClimate Forecast SystemReanalysis (CFSR). A three-layer vertical structure associated with the MJO, as previously suggested i...
متن کاملHow energy and water availability constrain vegetation water-use along the North Australian Tropical Transect
Energy and water availability were identified as the first order controls of evapotranspiration(ET) in ecohyrodrology. With a ~1,000 km precipitation gradient and distinct wet-dry climate, the North Australian Tropical Transect (NATT) was well suited for evaluating how energy andwater availabilities constrain water use by vegetation, but has not been done yet. In this study,we addressed this que...
